Nippon Steel starts construction to convert Yawata works to large electric arc furnace process
Nippon Steel has broken ground on converting its Kyushu Works Yawata area from blast furnace to a large-scale electric arc furnace (EAF) process, aiming to be the world's first mass-production system for high-grade steel via large EAF. The project supports Nippon Steel's carbon neutrality roadmap toward 2050 and its decarbonized 'GX Steel' supply, with similar EAF conversions underway at Hirohata (Setouchi Works) and Yamaguchi Works (Shunan).
