Yoshida Metal will consolidate its headquarters, factory and warehouse at the Yanagizu Monozukuri Industrial Cluster in Gifu City and construct a new headquarters factory. The project will renew machinery and introduce an automated warehouse to improve safety and productivity, with operations planned for January 2029.
Nippon Steel's European subsidiary U. S. Steel Kosice will invest approximately €900 million in a new electric arc furnace and oxygen plant at its Kosice steelworks in Slovakia. The electric arc furnace will have annual capacity of approximately 1.6 million tonnes and is scheduled to start operations in 2030; the oxygen plant is scheduled to start operations in 2029. The project will receive €350 million in subsidies from the EU Modernisation Fund through the Slovak government.
Sumitomo Metal Mining held a completion ceremony for battery recycling plants at its Toyo and Nickel plants in Ehime. The plants recycle nickel, cobalt, lithium and copper from used automotive batteries and have annual feedstock processing capacity of approximately 10,000 tonnes on a battery-cell-equivalent basis.
Aichi Steel will build a six-story new technology building at its existing site in Tokai, Aichi, to strengthen research and development and technical workforce training. The facility will include laboratories, offices and shared spaces, with completion planned for December 2028 and total investment of approximately ¥10 billion.
JFE Engineering will conduct Japan's first demonstration of separating and recovering CO2 from actual waste-incineration flue gas using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The pilot will use the Clean Plaza Fujimi waste-treatment plant in Mitaka, Tokyo, and is scheduled to run through the end of FY2026, with recovery of several kilograms of CO2 per day.
JFE Steel will expand surface-processing equipment for high-performance steel sheets at the Kurashiki district of its West Japan Works in Okayama, using Okayama Prefecture large-scale investment and regional hub promotion subsidy support. Construction is scheduled to start in October 2026, with operations beginning in June 2028.
Hanwa established HANWA STEEL SERVICE TIJUANA, S.A. DE C.V. in Rosarito, Baja California, its second coil centre in Mexico, and began full operations in August 2026. The site covers 38,086 sqm with 9,420 sqm of buildings and cuts and sells thin steel sheet for the Tijuana-Mexicali border region, where manufacturers supplying the United States are concentrated. Coil-centre functions previously run from San Diego Vista Steel Service in the United States transfer to the new operation at the end of August 2026. No investment amount was disclosed.
Aichi Steel held the groundbreaking ceremony for a new forging plant at partner Vardhman Special Steels in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. The plant will add a hot rolling mill line, with mass production targeted for FY2028; the investment amount was not disclosed.
Kobe Steel will invest approximately ¥2.07 billion in its aluminium casting and forging plant at the Daian works in Mizunami, Gifu, reinforcing welding and finishing processes and introducing a sand-mould 3D printer and X-ray CT inspection. The equipment serves aluminium and magnesium sand-cast parts for aerospace and defence. Operation is planned for 2028.
Neturen will install new cutting and marking equipment for its Double Stark high-strength rebar products at the Iwaki Plant in Iwaki, Fukushima. The equipment is expected to approximately double production capacity and begin operating in July 2027 to meet rising demand from logistics warehouses and data centers.
Kyoei Steel revised the planned investment in Vinton Steel's Texas melt shop and rolling-mill upgrade from $327 million to $437 million, citing higher material, logistics and construction costs. The new melt shop is planned for 360,000 net tons a year. Construction started in July 2026; melt-shop operations are targeted for July 2027 and integrated commercial production for October 2027. The company describes its planned direct billet transfer welding and rolling process as a world first.
CSK has completed construction of a new factory for thick steel plate processing in Gunma Prefecture, consolidating its regional business bases into a single site. The facility emphasizes automation for improved safety, productivity, and quality control, with automated/unmanned forklifts planned for introduction this autumn.
